Established in 2008.

SmartyPup! was founded in 2008 by Fawn Pierre Erler, one of San Francisco’s most well-known and respected dog trainers. With over 30 years of experience, Fawn trained under pioneers like Dr. Ian Dunbar, Jean Donaldson, and Bob Bailey. Before launching SmartyPup!, she taught the puppy curriculum to new and aspiring trainers at the SF SPCA Dog Trainers Academy—one of the most respected behavior programs in the country. SmartyPup! was created to fill a critical need: developmentally appropriate, science-based training for puppies and adolescent dogs during their most sensitive learning periods. It quickly grew into a trusted school serving thousands of Bay Area families. The company’s longtime mascot, Smarty the dog, came after the name—and embodied everything the program stands for: intelligence, heart, and a little spark. Today, SmartyPup! continues to offer expert classes, Puppy Day Camp, teen programs, and behavior support for every stage of your dog’s life

Fawn Pierre Erler has been training dogs professionally since 1994 and founded SmartyPup! in 2008. With over 30 years of experience, she’s known as one of San Francisco’s most respected experts in puppy development, adolescent behavior, and positive reinforcement training. Fawn studied under some of the most influential figures in the field, including Dr. Ian Dunbar, Jean Donaldson, and Bob Bailey. She later went on to teach the puppy curriculum to new and aspiring dog trainers at the San Francisco SPCA Dog Trainers Academy. Her mission with SmartyPup! has always been clear: provide developmentally appropriate, science-based training that sets dogs and their people up for long-term success. Thousands of Bay Area families have trusted her guidance through puppyhood, adolescence, and beyond. SmartyPup! reflects her belief that smart training, real-world support, and a lot of heart make all the difference—for dogs and their humans.
